A competition entry providing mixed tenure family housing within a masterplan for a site between the River Tees and a new tree lined boulevard in Stockton.
The solution seeks to solve three challenges: how to treat different site boundary situations; the removal of edges between pedestrian and vehicular surfaces; and to encourage safe movement and biodiversity through the site via integrated parkland and sustainable landscaping.
Blocks of flats define the north and south edges of the proposal and provide a backdrop to the boulevard and the river path. Windows and balconies overlook the public walkways, creating a safe walking and cycling environment. Houses within the site face east and west and private external spaces are located within the confines of the dwelling, avoiding the problem of garden fences on site boundaries. Vehicular and pedestrian movement within the site has been designed to allow people and cars to share street space safely. A village green provides communal play and meeting spaces as well as a route through the site to the river with safe access to all houses.
